Newly really rich 49ers Quarterback Brock Purdy loves bass fishing so his first purchase with his new $265 million contract is going to be a fancy new bass fishing boat, unless his wife vetos the idea, which he says could happen.
What else did we learn from San Francisco’s richest ever 49er? He loves the new vibe around the building is happy all the deals got done early for the team, he gave us a glimpse of what it’s like going through negotiations for a life changing deal and he remained true to himself through the process. He also wouldn’t admit it, but it’s clear Purdy gave the 49ers a break and left money on the table so the team could better build around him now and in the future. He wants to win and knows taking every last dollar isn’t always the best way to accomplish that goal.
Below is a video recap with some comments on each important issue from the Brock Purdy press conference:
DID YOU LEAVE MONEY ON THE TABLE AND GIVE THE 49ERS A BREAK?
There’s no doubt Brock Purdy could have grabbed more money if he wanted to. Clearly he loves football. He loves his teammates, he’s loves winning. He also doesn’t care about being the highest paid quarterback in the NFL. Purdy “settled” for $181 million guaranteed. Trevor Lawrence got $200 million guaranteed from the Jaguars. Lawrence will make an average of $55 million per season, Purdy will make $53 million or the same amount as Jared Goff per season. Purdy is better than Lawrence and a good comp for Goff. Purdy referenced having the ability to have good players around him. A clear nod towards taking a little less. I wouldn’t call it a home team discount, I would say he’s smart in knowing the better the players around him, the better he’ll play.
Those in the national media who say Purdy didn’t deserve this amount of money are just wrong. He’ll never escape being pick #262. Lawrence, Goff and Joe Burrow were number one overall picks in the draft. Josh Allen and Justin Herbert were top 10 picks. Jalen Hurts is the QB of the defending champs, all are seen as better than Brock Purdy. As you can see below, Purdy is top one or two in every stat outside of touchdown passes in an average season of each players career. Purdy also throws fewer passes than each playing in a more balanced offense. Each player makes close to what Purdy does per season and there are no complaints from the national media. Only when Mr. Irrelevant gets paid.

HOW MUCH OF YOUR MOTIVATION TO GET A DEAL DONE QUICKLY WAS BECAUSE OF HOW CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS WRECKED THE 2024 SEASON?
The 2024 49ers season was doomed from the start. Brandon Aiyuk’s training camp hold in, Trent Williams offseason hold out. Rickey Pearsall survived a bullet before the season started. Christian McCaffrey and Dre Greenlaw never got out of the starting gate. You know when a season is charmed and when one is cursed. The Football Gods served the 49ers a stinking, steaming pile last season. Brock Purdy was determined to do his part to make sure the 2025 season started with a positive vibe.
PURDY UNDERSTOOD THE NFL IS A BUSINESS BUT WANTED TO MAINTAIN WHO HE IS THROUGH THE PROCESS :
Let’s call this the anti-Brandon Aiyuk speech. Aiyuk was all over the place last off season and through training camp trying to get a deal done with the 49ers or somewhere else. One minute he was dabbing up Kyle Shanahan in street clothes on the field as part of his hold in, the next he was on social media begging to go play with his buddy Jaden Daniels in Washington. He was and it was a roller coaster. It only ended when Shanhan sprinted into John Lynch’s office to stop a trade to the Steelers. That drama was never going to be Brock Purdy. He knew a fair deal would get done. He knew the 49ers learned their lesson from the way last offseason’s negotiations went down. The deals for Purdy, George Kittle and Fred Warner are done before June and the majority of offseason work Usually the team waits until well into camp to get extensions done. They knew this year had to be different to set a new tone.
HIS THOUGHTS ON THE 49ERS LOSING SO MANY VETS IN THE OFFSEASON:
If you don’t watch or listen to John Lund Unleashed on a regular basis, now is a great time to start. Because you can ether follow the sheep and think the 49ers lost the heart and soul of their team this offseason and panic about it or realize they shed the roster of overpriced and often injured players who weren’t worth what other teams paid for them, which is the biggest issue with free agency in the NFL. Free agency exists because those teams who didn’t draft, develop and resign their own players need a place to try and make up for their mistakes. Those who are available are often overpaid, underachieving, haven’t reached their potential, are injured or old. It’s mostly slim pickings and good luck after the first day of drunk money being thrown around. Deebo Samuel (traded for a 5th round pick), Javon Hargrave (A free agent mistake), and Talanoa Huffanga (injured often), are players the 49ers said good bye to this offseason. All have already played their best ball. Charvarious Ward had an upspeakable tragedy hit his family and was never coming back to the scene of the crime. His wife left California during last season, never to return. The only major loss among the big names with little impact was linebacker Dre Greenlaw. The 49ers misread his market, tried desperately to get him back and he landed in Denver. That was the offseason. If you’re gong to complain, the incoming additions consisted of a blocking tight end and 100 special teams players, but not a kicker. I feel you there if that’s your reason for offseason disdain.
PURDY’S FIRST BIG PURCHASE? A BASS FISHING BOAT… IF HIS WIFE WILL LET HIM…
Come on! This guy goes from pick #262 to $265 million and he has to ask his wife if he can spend what …$100k or so on his favorite hobby? No one respects the vows of marriage more than yours truly, but if I just set up 20 generations of our family financially, I’m splurging on everything from a fishing boat, to buying a lake to roll it on. Fill the thing full of fish on my dime. Brock wasn’t poor before with all his endorsements, but daddy’s getting a boat, a lake, a house on that lake and that’s just the start of the toys. 300 pound men trying to crush my skull each week? I’m living the life while I can!
