The NFL replay system needs one major change immediately and it’s not because the dynasty that is the Kansas City Chiefs were gifted a major benefit of the call (again), on a Buffalo Bills fourth down stop on their way to Super Bowl 59 and a chance at an unprecedented NFL three-peat. Like it (Kansas City fans), or not (Everyone else), the Chiefs once again made good on critical plays, the Bills once again did not. Striped guys aside.
Red and white bias? There’s official bias in the NFL, but it’s not that.
When a call is challenged or reviewed there should be no bias. There is no call on the field. The field official forced to make a split second decision swimming in the chaos of a loud football game full of emotion. He or she is doing they can given the fairly unwelcoming circumstances. A replay official is in a cushy, quiet booth, no visitors allowed, with plenty of time, 20 professional replays and angles, forward and reverse capabilities, a cool or warm beverage and obviously in a much better position to call the play correctly from scratch, no influence needed. It doesn’t matter how the play was called amidst the mayhem down below, it matters only the correct call is made. Do away with the call on the field. Right now officials either confirm a call, which means you saw enough the play was called correctly. They didn’t see enough so the play stands based on the original call or the play is overturned, they saw enough in the booth to say the incorrect call was made. Why add those variables into the equation? So the zebras feel their authority isn’t being undermined? Are the stripes feelings hurt because they may not gotten the call right? Is the NFL protecting feelings and egos at the expense of getting it right? Once there is a review or a question, the higher authority takes over period. It’s like a legal case that has gone from the local police to the FBI. We’ll take over the investigation of the crime from here, thanks.
The NFL is so good in all other areas of the overall operation to be missing this obvious fly in the ointment. There is too much on the line each week in the regular season let alone the playoffs or Super Bowl to not be better.
